Introduction---Thank you for purchasing Scrap Book. I designed this program as a convenient way for DTP users to store and use the 500+ pages of clipart. Some users may wish to use another Scrap Book on their system as a "front end" to launch their Windows applications as well as the application buttons I have provided for the major DTP oriented programs. All users can use the bundled clipart in their "Books" or DTP projects, create custom buttons to launch their favorite application, keep notes and custom art in Scrap Book, and ad and remove pages. Upgrades for registered users will be reasonably priced and implement the suggestions you make. Please use Scrap Book and then let me know what you like and what you don't like as well as new features you want. Custom versions of this application are available. Please call me for the fee and your requirements. The proper operation of Scrap Book requires that ToolBook is properly installed on your system and that the following seven files are all located in your ToolBook directory and named exactly as stated: TBOOK.exe, SCRAPBK.tbk, TBKOPEN.dll, TBKWIN.dll, TBKUTIL.dll, TBKBASE.dll, and TBKCOMP.dll When you use Scrap Book and you see an option to click Cancel you may also use the Escape key. In some cases where you have options or buttons to select the space bar or Enter key may be used if you see a marquee around the item you wish to select. This help file will cover features that are not immediately apparent as you use this application. Steve Shubitz Published Perfection! 7486 La Jolla Blvd. Suite 552 La Jolla, CA 92037 U.S.A. Technical support hours: 9:00AM--5:00PM Monday--Friday -PST at (619) 546-9309 © 1990 All Rights Reserved Mouse Commands---A single click of the left button on the custom buttons or application specific icons will launch your program or data file. A single click of the left button on your clipart will select it and display a marquee around it. Drag it around on the page for position. You can click on successive objects to create a group. Once you have created a group you may drag it around the page or double click on the group to copy it to the clipboard. A group can ONLY be pasted into Scrap Book and only the clipart you click on will be selected regardless of the marquee's appearance. You may also click and drag your clipart with the left mouse button. Another way to select is to marquee your art by a single click and drag outside of it. Watch the marquee draw around your clipart. A double click of the left button on your clipart will briefly display a marquee and copy it to the clipboard. A double click of the RIGHT button will display the Open and Launch dialog box. If you hold down the Ctrl key and then click and drag with the left mouse button on any of the custom buttons or application specific icons you can move them around the page. After you position these elements you MUST release the left mouse button FIRST while still holding down the Ctrl key. If you release the Ctrl key first you will execute the script for your icon or button which is NOT a good idea.Make sure your clipart or other elements do not prevent proper operation of your buttons or icons. Bookmark---This feature is built into Scrap Book and automatic. When you Save or Save As on a page of clipart or the Index page and then Exit - the next time you launch Scrap Book you will navigate directly to this page. File Menu---The Change to color and change to black and white allow you to determine the colors that this application runs in. These changes only affect applications written with ToolBook. Scrap Book runs faster in black and white. More speed is available by launching Windows via "win/s" If you change to color from black and white you will have to restart Scrap Book for the changes to take affect. If you change to black and white from color you will have to restart Scrap Book for the changes to take affect. The Open and Launch feature on the file menu may also be selected by double clicking the RIGHT mouse button on a page. This is a handy feature to launch any application on your system or open a file and launch the application at the same time. The Exit option allows you to save your changes to Scrap Book, your Bookmark (page location), and Exit in one easy step. Edit Menu---The Change Name option assigns Scrap Book any name you wish up to 32 characters. This is handy when running 2 or more copies of Scrap Book. The other options on this menu are used to work with text and NOT clipart. Use the buttons on the page to work with your clipart. Text is selected by a click and drag of the left mouse button. The Paste option on this menu should only be used with text. The Select All option may be used on the Index page to copy all your page numbers and Titles to the clipboard and then paste them into notepad and print them. Pages Menu---The Add Page and Add Pages inserts a new page or pages in Scrap Book. Click and hold down the left mouse button on the page to stop adding pages. The Remove page option removes the current page from Scrap Book. Please make sure that's what you want to do. The Remove pages option starts with the current page and goes forward automatically. To stop this procedure click and hold down the left mouse button on the page. You may use this feature to edit Scrap Book down to 3 pages and then use this copy as a front end to launch your applications. For your protection one page of clipart which is titled "This page CAN NOT be removed" can not be removed. The Combine option merges two Scrap Books together using DDE. Lets assume you want to Combine the clipart and text that describes it from Book2. Launch Scrap Book and Book2. Make sure Book2 is NOT minimized and decide what page range you want to Combine. If Book2 is not running Combine will still work. Any changes made to Book2 should be saved before running Combine. Navigate to the page in Scrap Book where you want the clipart and text from Book2 merged. Lets assume this is page number 15 and you Combine pages 20 through 30 from Book2. Next select the Combine option and answer the questions. The page range could be from 1 to 1 or 20 to 30 or any valid range of clipart pages in Book2. If Book2 is not running it will briefly pop up and then be hidden. If Book2 is running it will be hidden. The cursor will change to a hourglass and Scrap Book will appear and process your request with no clipart visible. You will hear one beep for each page Combined. At this point you can stop Combine by holding down the Escape key until Book2 pops up. When Combine is finished you are notified, Book2 is closed down, and Scrap Book contains the 11 pages you specified starting with page 16. Sorting, Updating the Index , and a Save or Save As should be performed on Scrap Book after Combine is completed. Please make sure that your system contains enough memory and disk space before you Combine. While Combine is running you should NOT use other applications. Combine has been optimized for speed at the expense of a real time display however Combining 500 pages could take 20 minutes on some systems. You can substantially improve the performance of Combine by invoking a Change to Black and White and closing down all your other applications. If Combine hangs and you no longer hear a beep hold down the left mouse button on the page to break the DDE script and run Combine again with an erroneous page range to make Book2 visible. Next make sure Book2 is NOT minimized and run Combine again to finish. Launch Menu---This feature allows you to launch the bundled Windows applications which must be present on your system and located in a directory defined by your path statement. Titles Menu---This option refers to text that appears in the box at the top of each page describing the clipart on the page. You may edit this if you wish. The export option takes all the titles in your Scrap Book and saves them to a plain text file called titles.txt located in the root directory of your C drive. You should do this before you use the Load feature which automatically starts notepad and loads titles.txt. If notepad or titles.txt are not on your system this feature will not work correctly. The sort feature arranges the pages in Scrap Book in alphabetical order based on the text that describes the clipart. The sort is based on the first word. The search feature works in a number of ways. If you are on a clipart page you can search the text that describes your clipart. This search may also be invoked by a single click of the left mouse button on the black rectangle located at the bottom of the Titles box. If you are on the Help page and toggle "This page only" you can search this text. If you are on the Index page and toggle "This page only" you can search your Index entries. Install Menu---This feature creates application specific icons or custom buttons to launch your programs or data files with a single click of the left mouse button. You can move these buttons or icons around the page to customize Scrap Book. Hold down the Ctrl key and click and drag with the left mouse button on any of the custom buttons or application specific icons to move them around the page. After you position these elements you MUST release the left mouse button FIRST while still holding down the Ctrl key. If you release the Ctrl key first you will execute the script for your icon or button which is NOT a good idea. Make sure your clipart or other elements do not prevent proper operation of your buttons or icons. You will use the Custom 1-10 buttons or bundled icons to write a custom script to launch your programs or data files. This command: run "c:\art\myapp.exe" will launch the greater majority of applications. Some applications like A&L Editor which use overlays can only be launched with a double click of the RIGHT mouse button or place the directory in your path statement. This rule also applies to Designer and Scrap Book +. In this case the command is: run "myapp.exe" If you wish to open data files and the associated application which are in your path the command is: run "report.txt" Specify the location if the application is not in your path with this command: run "c:\art\report.txt" Your comments are always welcome in this regard or inquire about a reasonably priced custom Scrap Book that supports your specific needs. Slide Show Button---A great way to view all your clipart automatically. To stop the display click and hold down the left mouse button on the page. The Speed option permits you to slow down the Slide Show. The numeric range is Zero to 500. The larger the number the more delay between each page. Start with 50 and fine tune the delay on faster hardware. Your settings are saved with Scrap Book. Index Button---This button takes you to the Index page. A single click on any entry will navigate to the page. Use your Pg Up, Pg Dn, and cursor keys to view your Index. The Update button on this page rebuilds the Index. If you have a blank line after rebuilding the Index it means you have entered a carriage return when you were typing the description of your clipart in the titles field. Just keep typing to avoid this problem and the text will wrap around automatically. To fix the blank line in your Index navigate to the page above the blank line and click the cursor on the blank line and then strike the backspace key so the manually entered carriage return is removed. Go back to the Index page and navigate to the blank line and then strike the backspace key to remove the blank line. Don t forget to save your changes. The Word for Windows Icon uses DDE. The Paste option will launch Word minimized, insert a number of headings, page numbers, and paste all your Index entries into Word. The Print option performs all the functions of Paste plus printing your Index entries and sending a exit command to Word. The Word icon will flash and wait for your instructions. Please make sure you have enough memory to launch Word. Another way to print your Index is invoke Select All from the Edit menu and copy to the clipboard and paste into notepad. Go To Page? Button---This button has been removed. To navigate to any page click on the page number area in the bottom left corner of your screen. Copy Button---This button has been removed. To copy your clipart to the clipboard double click with the left mouse button on your clipart. A marquee will display to signal this action. Use the Paste button to move your clipart around. Cut Button---This button cuts the selected clipart on the current page to the clipboard. You can Undo this or Paste into another page. Clipart must be selected before you use this button. For your protection this button is disabled on the page titled "This page CAN NOT be removed." Paste Button---This button only works with clipart. If you copy from paintbrush and then use this button your clipart will appear in the upper left corner. Click and drag it into position. If you double click on your clipart in Scrap Book and then Paste it into the same page it will be placed on top of your original clipart. Click and drag with the left mouse button to position. The Arrow Buttons---Located at the bottom of each page. A single arrow button moves you forward or backwards one page at a time. To use the double arrow buttons click and hold the cursor on the button. This allows you to move foreword or backward in Scrap Book continuously till you release the mouse button. Watch the Page Number display as you do this. Both of these features are a quick way to navigate to a specific page or view clipart. Tips---Use Save As with a new name to compress Scrap Book and reclaim disk space. ToolBook has a limit on the size of bitmapped images. If your clipart fits on a page and does not overlap buttons or icons the paste should work. Colored clipart requires more memory than black and white clipart. The "Notes" pages contain objects that may only be used in ToolBook applications. The mouse routines for selecting and moving clipart are not very responsive. Please be patient and look for improvements in speed with the next version of ToolBook. Run Scrap Book in black and white for a substantial gain in speed. Use the Bookmark feature on the Index page if you prefer to open Scrap Book to the Index. If you are pasting art from paintbrush or other Windows applications it will appear in the upper left corner of Scrap Book. At this point click and drag it into position and make sure your art does not overlap a icon or button to prevent it from working. While your clipart is selected issue a Cut and scale your clipart for another paste. Customize Scrap Book by moving the application specific icons or custom buttons around the page to create work groups. Use Install to set up your data files as you work. Select Install on the same button and enter your new data file or application. Future Plans---DDE will continue to be implemented as more DTP applications support it. Speed and graphics import and export with the major formats (pcx, tiff, wmf, bmp) are a function of ToolBook and will be implemented when ToolBook supports these improvements or features.
